Suggesting the universe didn’t exist until 6,000 years before the present lacks support of both Scripture and science. The Genesis account depicts the creation of life, and its supporting ecosystem, not the origin of matter—much less the concurrent beginning of the entire universe!
God is the Author of all science and the Creator of all life. When religion and science appear to disagree, the interpretation of one, the other, or both is in error. Insisting the universe, space, matter, and water did not exist before the creation of life on earth is at odds with both disciplines.
The Bible specifically pictures the existence of a chunk of water-covered matter, “formless and empty,” floating in cosmic “darkness” 1 existing at the beginning of the recent week when God commanded the creation of life and the transformation of inert matter into a perfect, vibrantly alive Blue Planet.
Each literal, 24-hour day of creation week identifies a sequence of specific, creative events. Day one describes the creation of “light” that banished the existing “darkness” in response to the “Spirit of God…hovering over the waters.”2
This was followed by the creation of an atmosphere on day two and dry land and vegetation on day three3—a life-friendly ecosystem fashioned from that chunk of raw, water-covered matter floating in cosmic darkness for an unknown period of time. Measurements of the amount of sodium in the sea, and the level of the mud layers on the sea floor offer persuasive evidence the creation of earth’s environment occurred only thousands, not millions of years before the present.
There is no place in the Genesis narrative, from day one through day seven, referencing the specific creation of matter, water, energy, space, or angels—much less the beginning of the entire universe. Suggesting otherwise diverts attention from the Bible’s big picture focus on the miraculous creation of life on earth.
Genesis declares the infinite, eternal God of the universe created all things. Nowhere does the Bible assert the universe did not exist until 6,000 years before the present. The Bible describes “heaven,” as “God’s “dwelling place.” 4 The Lord’s Prayer begins, “Our Father, who art in heaven.” 5 Christ ascended into “heaven” 6 after His resurrection.
It is unsubstantiated speculation to assert no “heaven” existed prior to 6,000 years BP or to allege the Creator of the universe existed, for an infinity of time, without a “dwelling place,” until 6,000 years before the present!
“All the angels shouted for joy” 7 in honor of the creation of life on earth. There is nothing in Scripture suggesting angels were created on any day during creation week or that angels did not exist prior to creation of life on earth!
Implicitly, created angels existed with God in His heavenly “dwelling place” prior to Creation week. “There was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back…and they lost their place in heaven.” 8 The Bible states man was created “a little lower than the angels,” 9 and provides assurance God “shall give His angels charge over thee.” 10
The chance hypothesis offers no verifiable scientific evidence life on earth created itself accidentally in some “warm little pond” millions of years ago before evolving molecule-to-man. This dark, discredited concept has been depicted as “superstitious nonsense,” masquerading as “science.”
Evidence of the creation of life and conversion of raw matter into a perfect, life-friendly ecosystem during the relatively recent creation week does not extrapolate to suggest pre-existing raw matter did not originate until the young life creation event. Asserting earth’s inorganic matter as well as the entire universe did not exist until 6,000 years ago lacks Biblical and scientific credibility.
Without contrary verifiable evidence, it is unrealistic, even misleading, to contend all space, energy and matter did not exist until created within the identical week God created life on earth.
Conventional radiometric dating estimates the age of the earth by measuring known nuclear decay rates of certain materials. Methodologies like potassium-argon, uranium-lead, and samarium-neodymium, rely on these decay rates to calculate earth’s age in billions of years. Without this deep time crutch to provide meg-time years for natural selection and mutations to activate millions of accidental transit stops, Darwin’s inherently flawed conjecture unravels.
Loaded with anomalies, radiometric dating is arguably an inexact science.11 The deep time year scenario is burdened with inconsistencies such as less than expected levels of sodium in the sea and the minimal depth of mud levels on the sea floor.
The rate of the diffusion of helium into the atmosphere is seriously out-of- sync with expected findings if the process had been ongoing for millions of years. “Though the rocks contain 1.5 billion years worth of nuclear decay products, newly-measured rates of helium loss from zircon show that the helium has been leaking for only 6,000 (± 2000) years.” 12
In order to ratify an earth age of but a few thousand years, evidence needs to show “ ‘1.5 billion years’ worth of nuclear decay took place in one or more short episodes between 4,000 and 14,000 years ago.” 13 Definitive supporting, scientific evidence of this accelerated rate of decay has yet to surface.
The “young earth” postulate raises an unresolved collateral issue—the destructive consequences of excessive heat generated by the accelerated nuclear decay! Larry Vardiman pinpoints the dilemma.
“The amount of heat produced by a decay rate of a million times faster than normal during the year of the flood could potentially vaporize the earth’s oceans, melt the crust, and obliterate the surface of the earth.”14 No known scientific explanation confirms such radical accelerated decay rates occurred within a single year.
The Bible’s narrative of the Global Flood does not indicate God intervened to modify nuclear decay rates or other natural laws such as the speed of light, the decibel level of sound, gravity, or the atomic numbers of the elements. Scriptural accounts of miracles typically reflect some express or implied Divine purpose warranting God’s intervention.
Feeding the five thousand, the sun standing still, parting the Red Sea, Jericho’s walls toppling, water from a rock, and raising Lazarus from the dead represent prime examples. The purpose for drastically accelerating the nuclear decay rate is unclear unless a reminder that God reset the nuclear time clock when he perfected earth’s raw material.
Attempting to explain accelerated nuclear decay rates to accommodate a perception that the earth’s inorganic matter, space, and even the entire universe did not exist until the creation of life on earth, exposes the creation model to the unfounded charge religion is at odds with science. The “young earth” hypothesis unnecessarily diverts public attention from the core message that the creation of life is a miraculous gift from God.
Mountain man Harry Truman lost his life in 1980 when Mt. St. Helens blewits top. No one alleges the radiometric age assigned to the event’s volcanic residue ranging from 350,000 years to 2.4 million years ago.11 would represent Truman’s date of life and death should his fossil remains ever be discovered.
Regardless of the age of the burial site terrain, it’s presumptuous, and less than scientific, for any origins model to assign the fossil remains of a once-living plant or animal, the age of the surrounding burial site based on radiometric dating—irrespective of whether the adjacent matter is calculated to be thousands, or even millions of years old. The age of Planet Earth’s inorganic matter cannot dictate the age of the fossil remains it houses.
Conjecturing the universe did not exist until God created life on earth perpetuates uncorroborated tradition. “Earth age” calculation fades to irrelevancy in the context of the Biblical creation model which teaches diversified plant and animal life forms were created by the command of God within a single week of seven literal days. The “Young Life/Old Earth” Scriptural narrative of creation honors God as the creator of all things—including science.
The fact that life on earth, with its life-friendly ecosystem, was created at the command of God a few thousand years before the present renders inconsequential the age of earth’s matter, both theologically and scientifically. Implicit in this reality is recognition of basic fundamentals.
The future Blue Planet, built on a raw chunk of water-covered matter, floating in cosmic darkness, existed in space already at the beginning of the week all life was created on earth.
Its axiomatic fossils from recently deceased life forms don’t automatically inherit the radiometric age assigned their burial site’s surrounding terrain.
